East Fork Cellars should’ve reopened Fri, Oct 3rd after their September-long remodeling project but I don’t have confirmation on that. Enjoy tastings on Fri, Sat and Sun beginning at 11 am.

Cozy interior seating at Evergreen Wine Cellar surrounded by fine wines from around the world and old piano covers-a nod to when the space used to be a piano store

Evergreen Wine Cellar hosts a great Friday night tasting from 5-8 pm for $5 per person. Tomorrow Pam is sure to be featuring another great line up. Remember Valley of the Moon Zinfandel, which typically sells for $25, is on sale this month for $19.99/bottle. Evergreen has a neighborhood feel with a friendly cast of regulars whose mission it is to make you one by nights’ end.

The Grant House has a wonderful happy hour and terrific dinner menu showcasing fresh, local ingredients. Village Vineyard – Tastings at this gorgeous destination winery are from noon-6 pm Sat and 11 am-5 pm Sun.

Gougér Cellars – Gary recently completed a back deck for some lazy wine sipping. Don’t know if this weekend’s weather will cooperate with outdoor sipping but you can still pair your wine selection with one of his non-alcoholic ice creams like Muscat with toasted oak or Zinfandel chocolate chip. Wine AND ice cream tasting under one roof…it doesn’t get much better than that.

Bethany Vineyards – Tasting their consistently elegant wines Fri and Sat noon-6 pm, Sun noon-5 pm. For those fortunate enough to have been at WSU-Vancouver’s “The Promise of Washington Wines” last week, Walt gave an informative and entertaining presentation. A LONG list of excellent wine locations and weekend events

I love the classics – an era of jazz I’m too young to be born into, old movies, drinks that would make Sinatra sway. If you’re like that, Birch Street Uptown Lounge in Camas is your kind of place, too. The bartender, Dennis, would be easily recognized behind a mahogany bar 70 years in the past. His knowledge of his craft is staggering and he has a true gift for making people comfortable and providing white-linen service without being stiff. And their wine list? Yes, he’s made sure to give as much attention to that as his Negroni-making skills. My Revelry Cabernet Sauvignon was smooth, silky and a little sassy…kind of like Dennis.

Below is an extensive list of places to sip quality vino and some weekend goings-on in the Clark County area. Who says you have to cross the bridge to elevate a weekend? If you feel I missed a good spot, let me know.

Brewed in downtown Vancouver

Welcome to Brewed
Welcome to Brewed

Last Tuesday night my husband and I comfortably passed some time at Brewed in downtown Vancouver.

The space is bright and inviting downstairs; intimate and relaxing upstairs. The wait staff has always been very friendly and interested in getting to know the folks that frequent their establishment.

Brewed’s wine selection is limited but intentional. At any given time there are six reds, three whites and a blush available. My choice of a 2011 Charles & Charles blend of 72 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 28 percent Syrah was a nod to the fact that I am first and foremost a Cab girl. I was vacillating between Naked Winery’s Penetration Cabernet Sauvignon and, once I made my selection, the good-natured server (Kody) tempted me with a taste of the Penetration. I hated to admit it was a clear step up but Charles Smith does what he does well – which is make approachable wine with the intention of being consumed now. He lays no claim to fashioning a wine for aging because, truth be told, over 90 percent of wine purchased in America will be sipped within hours of its purchase.

Having said that, since this blend was predominantly Cab Sauv, it had the potential to be aged. Due to the acid and tannin structure of Cab, it tends to age the best of the Big 7 grape varietals. This wine definitely showed to me as more of a food-friendly wine than one you could have all on its own. While I know it would make me seem more impressive to say I drink all my wine with a nice meal, I don’t. I prefer to drink most of my wine on its own or paired with some munchies. By the time dinner comes along, my wine is gone. Oops!

Several years ago we checked out the Charles Smith tasting room on Spokane Street in Walla Walla. He has a few lines to choose from with different focuses for each; K Syrah, Charles Smith, Charles & Charles, ViNO and he’s even dabbling in sparkles with Secco Italian Bubbles – a partnership he’s formed with two sisters from Italia!

At Brewed you’ll find seating for about 6-8 downstairs but a lot of fun to be had upstairs where at least 26 could gather comfortably between a cozy nook with a bird’s eye view of the restaurant below, a farm table with seating for eight, counter-level seating perfect for hunkering down with a lap top in front of their big screen tv, a couple couches and a bean bag chair in the tv space and a few more tables. There’s even a couple full bookshelves; just a warm, community feeling, really.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be had at Brewed so there’s plenty to pair with a glass or two of wine. They also rotate a nice selection of microbrews and pints are $3.25 for anyone in the party who’s not a wine drinker.

Open Mon-Thu 7 a.m.-9 p.m., Fri-Sat 7 a.m.- midnight. and Sun 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Keep an eye out for a new look to Brewed sometime this summer as they change up their current footprint to bring more space and options to patrons.

Places to sip vino in Vancouver

Vancouver boasts some nice places to enjoy good wine but some of them are a bit sleepy when I’m there which makes me think people just don’t go off the beaten path much so I’d like to share a few favorites. Most of these establishments don’t have extensive wine lists but, if you enjoy a thoughtful wine selection in a less kid-friendly environment, you should find some new spots in this line up.

Brewed Happy hours: Considered their ‘after 5pm menu’ that goes until 10pm

Why I like it: This place is a bright, inviting whole-in-the-wall and the wines are chosen by the owners who are happy to tell you about every bottle they offer

Charlie’s Bistro Happy hours: 3-6pm and after 9pm

Why I like it: I particularly enjoy the bar seating because the bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly but not imposing, outdoor summer seating in the courtyard, healthier options on their happy hour menu, live music on Friday nights from 7-9pm (times can vary)

Hudson’s Bar & Grill inside the Heathman Lodge Happy hours: 4-6pm daily

Why I like it: Intimate setting, varied and healthier happy hour menu, near Westfield Shopping Center but tucked into a quiet area

Latte Da Coffee House & Wine Bar – Happy hours 4-6pm

Why I like it: This place feels more coffee house-focused by they do have a thoughtful selection of local wines. Additionally, they have a fantastic outdoor space that is underused every time I’m there. It’s also in an old house which just feels cozy. The downside is they serve their wine in stemless glasses so I don’t order white wines here but I’m a bigger fan of reds anyway.

Rusty Grape Vineyard

Why I like it: Ok, this place can actually have a lot of kids running around because they’re big on a family atmosphere and it’s rarely ‘sleepy’ but it’s still one of my top places to enjoy local wine in Clark County. Jeremy and Heather have strived for several years to create a warm, inviting space and they must be doing something right because they consistently have only a few wines to choose from. Last night they had two reds but their Bicyclette Rouge paired perfectly with the sweet, soft voice of Ashley Jhaveri. An added bonus: Vintner’s Hours are 4:30-6:30pm every Thursday when their wines are $3 per glass
